Elmwood Public Library Board members:
History of the Elmwood Public Library Mrs. Vera Springer and Mrs. Clara Reinke started the Elmwood Public Library about 1927. The Methodist Ladies Aid and the Altar and Rosary Society each gave the ladies $5 and they started in a small room in the First State Bank. The library was open evenings and the ladies donated their time. In order to raise money to buy books, card parties and smorgasbords were put on and Library Tag Days were held. The library was moved to the fire hall and Jessie Yates was the first librarian. Mrs. Lavina Edmonds and Mrs. Glen Young were also librarians in the early years. About 1949 the library was moved to the Earl Thompson building and Mrs. Lottie Moody was librarian until her death in 1954. Mrs. Jennie Taplin took over the duties of librarian, which she continued until retiring in 1970. The library was moved two more times during that period, first to the Archie Bowen building in 1956 and then to its present location in the Village Auditorium. |
